MOLLIER OR CARRIER, THAT IS THE QUESTION

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

Having the privilege to participate in international projects, apart from obvious language barriers, there have always been technical difficulties arising from different measurement unit systems or tools used for analysis. Presenting a Mollier chart analysis to a colleague from across the Atlantic, which is quite common in European countries, is not appreciated by colleagues from the US, for example. Similarly, I felt uneasy when looking at psychrometric chart analysis by Carrier, as habits are second nature to humans.

An additional challenge that completely hindered communication is the difference between the SI metric system and Imperial units. The best way to solve these problems is a computer program that automatically "translates" and displays the same information on both sides but in a different system and in a way that is understandable to both parties in the project.

From these problems, a new feature was born in the IX CHART program, which now offers analysis in any Mollier/Carrier system and SI/Imperial measurement units, with automatic conversion between both systems.

As an example, here are typical winter transformations involving air heating, heat recovery on the recuperator, and air humidification in the Mollier chart and SI units:

This is what the Mollier chart looks like in Imperial units.

The same chart with one click in SI units and CARRIER system:

And finally, CARRIER system and Imperial units:

By the way, I conducted a survey on which version of the program is more popular among a group of HVAC Design Engineers on LinkedIn, and the results indicate that globally Carrier system is more commonly used. Although the number of votes is not high, so the final results may differ, but it provides some insight into the matter.
